Sleep Apnea Screening

The Greater Montreal Sleep Center offers you an initial consultation with one of our specialists to evaluate the need for additional sleep testing.

Why should I consult for sleep apnea ?

Patients sometimes care more about resolving their snoring issues than treating their sleep apnea. However, consequences related to sleep apnea are much more devastating. Impaired nocturnal breathing prevents patients from reaching deep sleep stages (REM sleep). This can cause excessive daytime fatigue as well as psychological and physical problems.

How does a consultation/diagnosis of sleep apnea work?

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by performing a specific test called a sleep test (home-based sleep test or a polysomnography performed in a clinic/hospital).

These tests are only performed when you have a doctor’s reference.

On your initial visit, the specialist will be in measure to decide if you require this
particular test. The specialist will be questioning you on your sleep, daytime alertness, past medical history and will perform a physical exam of your adenoids and tonsils.
Based on those answers, he will decide whether or not you need to perform a sleep test.

What are the different symptoms that may indicate the presence of sleep apnea?

The main symptoms of sleep apnea are:

  • Snoring
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Arterial hypertension
  • The spouse notices frequent respiratory pauses

The degree of tiredness isn’t related to the severity of sleep apnea. A diagnostic test will be required in order to decide which treatment will be optimal (medical or surgical).

Are their different degrees (severity) of apnea?

Indeed, there is a way to measure the severity of sleep apnea. We use the Apnea–Hypopnea Index (AHI) in order to determine if the apnea is mild, moderate or severe.

How can I treat sleep apnea?

There are numerous solutions available at the Greater Montreal Sleep Center for non-invasive treatments such as a CPAP/BiPAP machine.
